The Wii Fit versus Fit TV

by Dee Davis on September 15, 2009

Anyone like me? Hate to exercise but need to exercise but look for every excuse in the book not to. OrealE? Yes “Oh Real-ly!”

Then the most incredible product came to market to help motivate us to be more active. The Wii. And all of us couch potatoes found a way to remain in front of the TV and get some other exercise in our lives besides remote control power lifts and presses (of buttons that is).

The Wii Sports made us want to be active. Instead of rolling a real bowling ball we threw a virtual one. Instead of hitting a real punching bag we swung at dead air. That was the first week. The second week we really got inspired. We ran out and bought the Wii fit game and the Wii fit board. Oh yeah. Now we’re doing something.

We insert the game and it asks us to take a series of balance and coordination test that give us our Wii Fit age. It normally turns out to be 10 or 20 years older than we are. Your Wii fit age is 74. OMG!!! And after a week of gyrating your hips in hula hoop and stair stepping to the rhythm of your virtual instructor the excitement fizzled.

You pushed the Wii fit board under the coffee table. You abandoned the Wii altogether. Now it’s collecting dust. You occasionally look to see a neon blue light flicker on after you accidently pick of the Wii remote instead of the HDTV remote. Yeah the enthusiasim gone.

Back to flipping channels. One morning while flipping channels I came across an exercise channel. It was Fit TV. They were doing some sort of aerobic exercises. The instructors were very attractive I must say. That’s probably why it held my attention. As I continued to watch I was at awe at how wonderful their bodies looked. Then I looked at mines. UGH!!! I crawled off the couch and began to follow the fitness instructors’ instructions. Wasn’t so bad. Burned a little. But wasn’t bad. The instructor suggested we get out our stair step if we had one but could continue to participate if we did not. I wanted a stair step. Then I remembered I did have one.

I grabbed the Wii-fit board, my wife’s 5 pound weights, and had a great 30 minute workout which was the duration of the program. I didn’t go right back to it the next day. But it stayed on my mind. How wonderful it felt. How personal the instructions felt coming from a live instructor.

No Wii fit ages. No you’re off balance. No criticisms. Simply work at your own pace and if you can do your best to keep up. But do your best.
So about 3 days later I turned on Fit TV found a different instructor who had a similar workout and enjoyed myself. I’m pacing myself right now. Let’s try every 3 days or so for now. As I get comfortable with that then I’ll add a day. Yeah that’ll work for me: my Wii fit board, my wife’s 5 lb weights, and my remote pointed to Fit TV. I’ll keep you posted.
